Where an activity is self-directed such as reviewing a book,
video, article, participating in a study group, initiating
a field trip or undertaking research an MTANS - CEU
SELF-DIRECTED ASSESSMENT form must be completed for
each such self directed activity. (A sample is attached to
the end of this package.) A copy of the MTANS - CEU
SELF-DIRECTED ASSESSMENT form must be submitted to
MTANS within 30 days of your completing a
self-directed activity in order to earn CEU credit(s) for that
activity.
The following notes are intended to clarify what the CEU Committees
expectations are with respect to each activity type.
BOOK - a literary composition of some length
read in its entirety.
ARTICLE - a literary piece in a journal,
magazine or separate section of a document or chapter(s) of
a book.
VIDEO - of or pertaining to any visual media
of some length, that can be rented purchased or borrowed,
STUDY GROUP - a minimum of three health care
professionals working in a structured practical or theoretical
model with a specific focus and intended outcome of study.
Areas of study must be consistent with the scope of practice
established by the Association and have significant content
directly related to the practice of massage therapy. Examples
of areas of study can include and are not necessarily limited
to:
- Regional anatomy review
- Treatment protocols for specific regions of anatomy
- Review/Learn methods of taking blood pressure and the
implications of Hypertension
- Muscle Length Tests
- Orthopedic Assessments and special Tests
- the "study group session" may
be evaluated by the Continuing Education Committee on a random
basis as part of a process to confirm the self-assessed credit.
Therefore each member/participant of such a Study Group must
complete a MTANS - CEU SELF-DIRECTED ASSESSMENT form., providing
the name, designation ( RMT , DC , MD, etc.), and daytime telephone
number of each participant.
- The MTANS - CEU SELF-DIRECTED ASSESSMENT
form allows for each participant to elaborate
on how the activity was structured. Examples may include
but are not limited to:
- Hands-on practice on other participants or
participants' clients/patients
- Discussion of theory/hands-on practice
- Lecture given by study group provider or guest
speaker.
- The MTANS - CEU SELF-DIRECTED ASSESSMENT
form allows for each participant to describe
what study aids or reference materials were used. Examples
may include but are not limited to:
- Manuals (include title, date of publication,
ISBN #, publisher/distributor, etc.)
- Texts (include title, date of publication,
ISBN #, publisher/distributor, etc.)
- Videos (include title, date of release or
copyright distributor, etc.)
FIELD TRIP - visiting a site with a specific
focus for a specific outcome in knowledge as a result of the
field trip. For Primary Activity CEU consideration the focus
activity at the host site must be consistent with the scope
of practice established by the Association and have significant
content directly related to the practice of massage therapy.
It is generally expected that such activities are hosted by
qualified interpreters. Examples of suitable field trips can
include and are not necessarily limited to:
- Cadaver Lab
- Functional Rehabilitation Facility
- Hydrotherapy Spa
- Observer of other complimentary modalities.
- the awarding of CEU credits for a FIELD Trip
is subject to a the member submitting a proposal to the CEU
Committee beforehand. The proposal must include
anticipated answers to the SELF-DIRECTED Assessment form.
- For Secondary Activity CEU consideration the
proposed Field Trip must conform to a strictly reasonable interpretation
of the definition of a "Secondary Activity," resulting in
an outcome for the Member, which will have potential impact
on client care indirectly.
- A proposal for a FIELD TRIP must anticipate
the questions outlined in the MTANS - CEU SELF-DIRECTED
ASSESSMENT form with respect to:
- Why are you choosing this field trip?
- What will it be about?
- What do you expect to learn?
- How might you use this experience and
information in your practice?
- Where is the field trip to?
- Who will it be facilitated/hosted by?
- What is the anticipated duration of the
field trip?
- Do you consider the field trip a Primary
or Secondary Activity?
- When do you intend to do the field trip?
- As with any CEU Evaluation, the Member is required
to submit the proposal in advance of the activity. The proposal
will be reviewed by the Committee under the criteria outlined
in the MTANS Continuing Education and Professional Development
Policy, specifically Part 3b (Section 6) - Assigning Credit
Values to Activities. In other words, allow six to eight
weeks to receive a NOTICE OF APPROVAL for your proposed field
trip.
RESEARCH - Specific guidelines for CEU evaluation
of "RESEARCH" will be developed as Member interest in this
area warrants. In the meantime, should a Member wish to undertake
research or initiate a research project, with an intention
of receiving CEU credit for the work, the Member is encouraged
to submit a proposal to the Committee for their consideration.
The proposal, at a minimum, must provide anticipated answers
to the questions found in the MTANS - CEU SELF-DIRECTED
ASSESSMENT form.
As with any CEU
Evaluation, the Member is required to submit the proposal
in advance of the activity. The proposal will be reviewed
by the Committee under the criteria outlined in the MTANS
Continuing Education and Professional Development Policy,
specifically Part 3b (Section 6) - Assigning
Credit Values to Activities. In other words, allow six
to eight weeks to receive a NOTICE OF APPROVAL for your
proposed research.
