Posted: 07 Jul 2008MTANS’ Volunteers Contribute to Pilot Study |
We are very pleased to announce that the research project sponsored by Dalhousie University, the Canadian College of Massage & Hydrotherapy, and Nova Scotia Hospital’s Withdrawal Management (Detox) Program has begun! Many thanks to all twenty-six MTANS members who have been trained in the chair massage protocol, and who have volunteered to participate in the study. Members’ response has far exceeded expectations. Thanks, also, to the Holistic Health Research Foundation of Canada and the Massage Therapy Research Fund, which sponsored this pilot study with a significant grant.
The impact of alcohol and other drug abuse has become a prominent health issue in Canada and in Nova Scotia, posing harm to individuals, families and communities. The pilot study at the NS Hospital’s in-patient Detox unit, which began on June 4th and which will run through September, is designed to measure the effects of Massage Therapy in reducing side effects which complicate addictions recovery.
Eighty patients (male and female, ages 18-65) will be recruited and screened by the Withdrawal Unit’s hospital staff, following strict ethical guidelines. The volunteer patients will be assigned to one of two groups. Group One, the treatment group, will receive a 20-minute chair massage administered by RMTs, and Group Two, the control group, will be asked to engage in a 20-minute self-selected relaxation technique in the same environment.
Using a pre-test, post-test research design, participants will be monitored before and after the massage intervention (and control). The study will be the first such objective measure in a Canadian (or any) addiction recovery program. Study findings will contribute toward 1. providing patients with excellent, progressive addictions treatment; 2. promoting the development of skills necessary to design and implement research in massage therapy and 3. encouraging the use of evidence-based research to educate health professionals and the public about the value of therapeutic massage. MTANS members can be very proud of their involvement in this collaborative project.

Posted: 07 Jul 2008MTANS’ Volunteers Required |
The success of our association depends on the efforts of its members. MTANS is very fortunate to have many volunteers who give of their time on the various committees of MTANS. As all members enjoy a little more relaxation over the summer months, why not think about getting involved when Fall approaches.
Presently the Conference Committee and Continuing Education Committee are looking for new members.

Posted: 07 Jul 2008Weekend to End Breast Cancer |
The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting the IWK and QEII is a 2-day, 60km fundraising walk this summer to aid in the creation of a new breast health centre at the IWK. Over the course of the weekend, participants will walk 60kms through the streets of Halifax and we want to ensure they are well looked after, including being able to provide them with massages when necessary.
We are looking for RMTs who can volunteer their time on Saturday August 16, 2008 to greet our participants at our camp and provide them with massage services free of charge.
The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Benefiting the IWK & QEII August 15 to 17, 2008 (902) 425-WALK (9255) www.endcancer.ca
